In 4x4 vehicles, especially modified for the purpose of traversing Iceland’s varied terrain, we travel over the lava plateau Hellisheidi and proceed via the southern coastal lowlands, to the greenhouse village Hveragerdi. The route passes through some of the prettiest countryside in Iceland – on a clear day there are frequent views of mountains including snow shrouded Hekla, the country’s most active volcano, and the towering, ice capped Eyjafjallajökull.

We begin our tour from the harbour in Heimaey – a harbour that for a long time has been a shelter for the Icelandic fishing fleet, but was almost lost in the volcanic eruption on the island in 1973.
